In the recent past, I had to visit the Royal Darwin Hospital. I have to say that my visit to this hospital is nothing but wonderful and I did not find any room to complain about the quality of the services provided there. The nurses and doctors at this hospital are simply fantastic. They are very professional and kind to their patients. This makes the patient feel comfortable at all times and it is something really commendable. The fact that I was diagnosed with appendicitis immediately shows the efficiency of the people who worked at this hospital. All the procedures that were done in order to treat me were carried out in an efficient manner.

Nicely new renovated, very good service, I waited like less than 5 minutes and was called to neurologist. Not like it used to be. Hours waiting, royal Darwin hospital is a great place now and the food was great, big choice. Yummy.

A particular RN nurse whom I won’t name, at the triage is an absolute monster of a woman. She dismissed my pain as “it’s just kidney stones” when it wasn’t. I had an immediate referral to go to emergency. I was so hesitant to go as I had a similar situation last year which left me waiting so long in the emergency that I started showing signs of sepsis which has caused damage to my kidney forever. Just because you deem something unworthy of care means doesn’t mean it’s true. You need to find a job that’s better suited as you are clearly not a person who is empathetic to people - which is something incredibly important in this job. After complaining the third time she admitted she never even read my referral which means I was bumped lower on the list. The doctors I saw however were fantastic when you can eventually see them. Everyone has a right to medical care suited for their needs. Just go anywhere else but here. Your life may very well depend on it.

I am a mother who had a caesarean section and gave birth to a baby 6 weeks premature. My baby requires feeding every 3 hours, and I am currently on strong pain relief, unable to drive or safely travel back and forth. After being admitted for 5 days, I was suddenly discharged from the maternity ward with no warning, despite being told the day before that I would be staying until Monday. The justification given was “you’re a local, you’ll be alright” a deeply dismissive and inappropriate comment that completely ignored my medical condition, my baby’s needs, and my lack of transport. Being Aboriginal should never be used as a reason to assume I can “manage” without support. That comment felt racist, careless, and dehumanising. I was left in an impossible position: expected to return every 3 hours to feed my premature baby while unable to drive, in pain, and with a partner who must work. This was unsafe, unethical, and disrespectful care. No mother, especially one recovering from major surgery with a premature newborn should be treated this way. I am shocked that this level of disregard exists in a public hospital maternity ward. I hope senior management takes this seriously, because no other mother should have to experience what I did.

Extremely disappointing experience at RDH Emergency Department We went to RDH ED at 9:30 am for an emergency ectopic pregnancy surgery—a life-threatening condition. Despite the urgency, the surgery was only completed at 5:00 pm, after hours of stressful waiting but all went well DRs were kind and friendly, but After surgery, no doctor came to explain the outcome or speak to us, which was very concerning. While some staff were kind, one RN was rough and lacked compassion, which is unacceptable for a post-surgery patient, as they said to wait till morning for DR. At 7:00 pm, we were told my wife had to stay overnight, but security coordinator refused to allow any family member to stay with her, even after emergency surgery. This was shocking and inhumane, especially when we are paying around $1,500 per night. Lack of communication, long delays, poor bedside manner, and unreasonable rules made this traumatic experience even worse. RDH seriously needs to review its emergency and post-operative care.
