What PRP Treatment Involves
PRP (platelet-rich plasma) is a treatment that uses components of your own blood to encourage tissue repair and renewal. A practitioner draws a small amount of blood from your arm, much like a routine blood test. The sample is then spun in a centrifuge to separate the platelet-rich plasma from the rest of the blood. This plasma is rich in growth factors that may help stimulate collagen production in the skin or support hair follicles on the scalp.
The prepared plasma is then injected into the target area or applied to the skin in combination with microneedling. For facial rejuvenation, PRP is often used to improve skin texture, tone and fine lines. For hair, it is injected into the scalp to support thinning areas. Because the material comes from your own body, the risk of an allergic reaction is generally low.
What to Expect
A typical PRP session takes around 45 to 90 minutes, including the blood draw, preparation and application. Most clinics apply a numbing cream beforehand to keep you comfortable. You may feel minor stinging during injections.
Afterwards, it's normal to have some redness, mild swelling or pinpoint bruising for a day or two. Scalp treatments may cause tenderness. Most people return to normal activities quickly, though clinics often advise avoiding heavy exercise, alcohol, saunas and direct sun for 24 to 48 hours.
PRP is not a one-off fix. Most protocols involve a course of three to six sessions spaced a few weeks apart, followed by occasional maintenance.
