What are anti-wrinkle injections?
Anti-wrinkle injections use a purified muscle-relaxing protein (a prescription medicine) to temporarily reduce the activity of specific facial muscles. When those muscles relax, the overlying skin creases less, which softens the appearance of dynamic lines β the wrinkles that appear when you frown, raise your eyebrows or smile.
The most commonly treated areas are the frown lines between the brows, horizontal forehead lines, and crow's feet around the eyes. Results are not permanent; the effect typically lasts around three to four months before muscle movement gradually returns.
What to expect at your appointment
A treatment usually starts with a consultation, where a practitioner assesses your facial movement, discusses your goals and confirms you're a suitable candidate. Because these are prescription medicines, a doctor or nurse practitioner must be involved in prescribing β even if a registered nurse administers the injection.
The injections themselves are quick, often taking 10β15 minutes. A very fine needle is used, and most people describe the sensation as a brief sting or pinch. There's minimal downtime β you can generally return to normal activities the same day. You may have small red marks or minor bruising at the injection sites, which settles quickly.
Results aren't instant. You'll usually notice changes within 3β5 days, with the full effect at around two weeks. Many clinics offer a complimentary review appointment at the two-week mark to check the result and adjust if needed.
Typical price ranges in Sydney
Pricing varies depending on the clinic, the practitioner's experience, the brand of product used, and how many units or areas you're treating. As a general guide in Australia:
- Per area (e.g. frown lines only): roughly $150β$400
- Per unit pricing: commonly $10β$25 per unit
- Multiple areas (frown, forehead and crow's feet): often $450β$900+
These figures are indicative only and can change over time and between clinics. Always confirm the exact cost at your consultation. Be cautious of heavily discounted deals β extremely cheap pricing can sometimes signal diluted product, inexperienced injectors or pressure-based sales tactics. Australian regulations also restrict the advertising of prescription medicines by brand name, so reputable clinics will discuss specifics with you in person rather than online.
How to choose a clinic in Sydney
Sydney has a wide range of cosmetic clinics, and this page features well-regarded options including Nova Cosmetic Clinic in the CBD, MySkin Solution Clinic, Ellumina Cosmetic Clinic, M1 Med Beauty Sydney, Rejuvenation Clinics of Australia and others. When comparing clinics, look beyond star ratings alone and consider:
- Who performs and prescribes the treatment. Confirm a doctor or nurse practitioner is involved and that the injector is a registered health practitioner.
- Consultation quality. A good clinic takes time to understand your face and goals, and won't rush you or push you toward more than you need.
- Reviews and longevity. Consistent positive feedback across many reviews (as several clinics on this page have) is a useful signal, though it shouldn't replace your own due diligence.
- Hygiene and facilities. The clinic should be clean, professional and equipped to manage any complications.
- Aftercare. Ask whether reviews and any necessary touch-ups are included.
AHPRA and safety considerations
In Australia, anyone administering anti-wrinkle injections must be a registered health practitioner. You can β and should β verify your practitioner's registration on the AHPRA (Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency) public register at ahpra.gov.au. This is a free, quick check that confirms they're qualified and in good standing.
Anti-wrinkle injections are generally very safe when performed by an experienced, registered practitioner, but no medical treatment is risk-free. Possible side effects include bruising, mild headache, temporary eyelid or brow drooping, and asymmetry. These are usually temporary. Make sure you disclose your full medical history, medications and any allergies. The treatment is not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding, or for people with certain neuromuscular conditions.
Questions to ask before you book
- Are you registered with AHPRA, and what are your qualifications?
- Who prescribes the product, and will a doctor or nurse practitioner assess me?
- How many units or areas do you recommend, and why?
- What does the total cost include β is a review appointment provided?
- What are the possible side effects, and how do you manage complications?
- Can I see before-and-after examples of your own work?
Taking the time to ask these questions β and verifying registration β helps ensure you get a natural, safe result from a practitioner you can trust.

Frequently asked questions
How much do anti-wrinkle injections cost in Sydney?
As a general guide, expect around $150β$400 per area or roughly $10β$25 per unit, with multiple-area treatments often $450β$900+. Prices vary by clinic, practitioner and product, so confirm the exact cost at your consultation. Be wary of unusually cheap deals.
Is there any downtime after the treatment?
Downtime is minimal. Most people return to normal activities the same day. You may have small red marks or minor bruising at the injection sites that settles quickly. It's best to avoid lying down, exercising or rubbing the area for a few hours afterwards.
Are anti-wrinkle injections safe?
They're generally very safe when performed by an experienced, AHPRA-registered practitioner. Possible side effects include bruising, mild headache or temporary drooping, which usually resolve on their own. Disclose your full medical history, and avoid treatment if pregnant or breastfeeding.
Who is allowed to give anti-wrinkle injections in Australia?
Only registered health practitioners can administer them, and a doctor or nurse practitioner must be involved in prescribing the medicine. You can verify any practitioner's registration for free on the AHPRA public register at ahpra.gov.au before booking.
How do I choose the best clinic in Sydney?
Look at the practitioner's qualifications and AHPRA registration, the quality of the consultation, hygiene standards, and consistent reviews. The clinics featured on this page are well-rated options, but always do your own checks and ask questions before committing.
