What dermal fillers actually do
Dermal fillers are injectable gels, most commonly made from hyaluronic acid (HA) — a sugar molecule that occurs naturally in your skin and holds onto water. When injected, fillers add volume beneath the skin to plump areas that have lost fullness with age, smooth deeper folds, and refine facial contours such as the cheeks, lips, chin, jawline and under-eye hollows.
Unlike anti-wrinkle injections, which relax muscles, fillers physically restore or add structure. HA fillers are temporary and, in most cases, can be dissolved with an enzyme called hyaluronidase if you're unhappy with the result or a complication occurs.
What to expect at your appointment
A good first visit starts with a consultation, not a needle. The injector should assess your face, discuss your goals and medical history, and explain realistic outcomes. Treatment itself usually takes 20–45 minutes depending on the areas treated.
Most HA fillers contain local anaesthetic, and a numbing cream may also be applied. You may feel pressure, pinching or a mild stinging sensation. Afterwards, it's common to have some swelling, redness, tenderness or bruising for a few days. Lip fillers in particular can swell noticeably for 24–72 hours.
Results are visible immediately but settle over one to two weeks. Depending on the product and area, results typically last 6 to 18 months, after which the filler is gradually broken down by your body.
Typical price ranges in Australia
Pricing varies by clinic, the practitioner's experience, the product used and how much is needed. As a general guide only, in Australia you can expect:
- Per syringe (1mL): roughly $450–$900
- Lip fillers: commonly $450–$700 for a single syringe
- Cheek or chin contouring: often requires multiple syringes, so total cost can run $900–$2,500+
- Consultation: sometimes free, sometimes a fee that's redeemable against treatment
These figures are indicative and change over time. Always confirm exact pricing — and what's included — directly with the clinic. Be cautious of prices that seem unusually cheap, as this can reflect diluted product, inexperienced injectors or rushed appointments.
How to choose a clinic in Adelaide
Reviews are a useful starting point, but volume and recency matter as much as star rating. A clinic with hundreds of consistent reviews offers a different kind of reassurance than a newer practice with a handful of glowing ones — both can be excellent, so read the detail.
The clinics featured on this page span the inner city and surrounding suburbs — including Norwood, Parkside, Wayville, Kent Town, Torrensville and North Adelaide — and range from boutique practices to high-volume clinics. Consider:
- Who performs the injections — a registered nurse, cosmetic doctor or specialist, not a non-medical staff member.
- The consultation process — do they take time to understand your goals and flag what won't suit you?
- Convenience and aftercare — proximity matters if you need a review appointment.
- Honesty over upselling — a trustworthy injector will sometimes recommend less treatment, or none.
AHPRA registration and safety
Dermal fillers are a medical procedure with real risks, so regulation matters. In Australia, prescription injectables must be administered by an appropriately qualified and registered health practitioner.
Always verify your injector's registration on the AHPRA register (the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency, at ahpra.gov.au). You can search a practitioner's name to confirm they hold current registration as a doctor or nurse. From mid-2025, advertising rules for cosmetic procedures have also tightened, so be wary of clinics that rely on heavy discounting or social-media hype rather than clinical information.
While complications are uncommon, they can be serious. The most significant risk is vascular occlusion — filler blocking a blood vessel — which requires urgent treatment to prevent tissue damage or, rarely, vision loss. This is why injector skill, anatomical knowledge and access to hyaluronidase are non-negotiable. Less serious side effects include bruising, swelling, lumps, infection and asymmetry.
Questions to ask before booking
- Are you registered with AHPRA, and what are your qualifications and experience?
- Which brand and type of filler will you use, and why?
- How much product do you recommend, and what will it cost in total?
- What results can I realistically expect, and how long will they last?
- What are the risks, and how do you manage complications like vascular occlusion?
- Do you keep hyaluronidase on site to dissolve filler if needed?
- What does aftercare and any follow-up involve?
Take your time, never feel pressured to commit on the day, and trust an injector who is upfront about both benefits and limitations. The best result comes from a skilled, registered practitioner who prioritises your safety and a natural-looking outcome.

Frequently asked questions
How much do dermal fillers cost in Adelaide?
As a general guide, expect around $450–$900 per 1mL syringe, with lip fillers often $450–$700. Contouring the cheeks, chin or jawline may need multiple syringes, pushing the total higher. Prices vary by clinic, product and injector, so always confirm directly with the clinic.
How long do dermal fillers last?
Most hyaluronic-acid fillers last between 6 and 18 months, depending on the product, the area treated and your individual metabolism. Lips tend to break down faster than firmer structural areas like the cheeks or chin. Top-up treatments maintain the result.
Is there any downtime after fillers?
Downtime is usually minimal. Expect some swelling, redness, tenderness or bruising for a few days — lips can swell noticeably for up to 72 hours. Most people return to normal activities straight away, though it's wise to avoid strenuous exercise and alcohol for 24 hours.
Are dermal fillers safe?
When performed by a qualified, registered practitioner, HA fillers have a strong safety record and can be dissolved if needed. The main serious risk is vascular occlusion (a blocked blood vessel), which is why injector skill matters. Less serious effects include bruising, swelling and lumps.
How do I check my injector is properly qualified?
Dermal fillers should only be administered by an AHPRA-registered health practitioner such as a doctor or registered nurse. Search the practitioner's name on the AHPRA register at ahpra.gov.au to confirm current registration, and ask about their specific experience with fillers.
